When you think about luxury interiors, what comes to your mind? Mirrored finishes? Crystals? Diamonds? Crushed velvet? Brand labels?

Across Cheshire, there’s an image of ‘luxury’ that results in spaces that look impressive, but leave you feeling like a guest in your own home. You’re constantly conscious of mess, noise, wear and tear, and you end up feeling like everyday life needs to be carefully managed rather than enjoyed.

That version of luxury has never really aligned with how we see things at Natalie Holden Interiors. We believe luxury is something you feel, not something you show.

It’s that exhale after a long day at work, when you walk through the door, kick off your shoes and sink into the sofa ready to binge your latest Netflix obsession. It’s a space where the family finally comes together after a busy week, reconnecting and catching up over a Sunday roast. It’s a feeling of safety and security. A place where you can drop your guard and be yourself.

Luxury is about enhancing your wellbeing, and your home should actively support that.

How we build the feeling of luxury

That feeling of luxury doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of continuous conversations with our clients and hundreds of carefully considered design choices, all coming together to make life feel easier.

Our luxury interiors are always planned with one crucial goal in mind: to support how you function and how you feel living in your home.

As a studio, we begin by listening. Not just to what you like visually, but to how you live day to day. We ask questions that get beneath the surface:

– How are you living now?

– How do you need your home to support you?

– Where does life feel busy, messy, overwhelming or restrictive?

These conversations shape everything that follows. They allow us to design with intention rather than assumption, and to build homes that respond to real life rather than an Instagram-ready version of it.

Without this understanding, even the most beautiful space can feel frustrating. When homes aren’t designed around real routines, daily life becomes harder.

Putting quality, longevity and meaning at the forefront

One of the clearest ways we build that sense of luxury is through quality and longevity. We’re not interested in finishes that look impressive on day one but cause stress six months later because they’re falling apart, or have been worn down quickly by daily family use. You shouldn’t have to worry about spills or hesitate before using a space properly.

Instead, we focus on sourcing materials that age well, adapt over time and support everyone occupying the home.

A solid wood dining table, for example, provides an adaptable surface for work, dining, and creative activities with the kids. Over time it becomes a central hub where stories are exchanged and memories are formed. It becomes a heart within the home. And when it’s in need of an aesthetic refresh, it can be sanded down and re-stained.

We apply the same thinking to sourcing. Wherever possible, we work with local suppliers, craftspeople and makers. There’s a depth of connection that comes from knowing where something was made, who made it, and that it was made well. Clients often tell us there’s reassurance in that process – a confidence in knowing their home has been built thoughtfully, not hurriedly.

Homes should feel personal, not like a display

Luxury should never feel anonymous. We often integrate vintage or antique pieces into our designs, not to create a particular look, but to add character and individuality. These unique pieces can really ground a space and prevent it from feeling overly polished or staged.

That said, luxury isn’t defined by owning antiques. A home without them can still feel incredibly luxurious if it reflects the people who live there. What matters most is personality. Existing furniture, artwork and objects that hold meaning are often some of the most important items in a home. They carry memory, identity and emotion, and they anchor a space in your real life.

This is how we avoid creating interiors that feel like show homes. When a design reflects your life through the past, present and future, it naturally feels more comfortable and more authentic.

Designing for adaptability and everyday ease

Life changes, and your home needs to be able to change with it.

We design with adaptability in mind, ensuring spaces can evolve as routines shift, families grow or priorities change. That flexibility is a key part of what makes a home feel supportive rather than restrictive. You no longer have to constantly adapt yourself to the space – instead, the home adapts with you, offering reassurance as life changes rather than becoming another source of pressure.

Function plays a huge role here. Storage that genuinely works. Layouts that allow movement and flow. Spaces where everything has a purpose. When a home is designed properly, daily routines feel simplified and less mentally demanding. That ease is often what people describe as luxury (even if they don’t realise it straight away).

Being able to use every space in your home, without stress or hesitation, is one of the most understated forms of luxury there is.

We don’t chase trends

You won’t find us promoting a signature style at Natalie Holden Interiors, and that’s entirely intentional.

We don’t believe luxury interior design should force a particular aesthetic onto a home. Trends come and go, but the way you live is far more important. Our role is to build homes around people, not to mould people around a style.

That doesn’t mean we ignore trends completely. We enjoy selecting the right elements that help you express your personality and bring joy, but only when they genuinely serve you and will stand the test of time.

Borrowing elements from trends and blending them together can create something wonderfully unique. Style should support individuality, not override it.

For example, our client had been living in their property for 15 years when they decided to remove their old conservatory and add an extension. As part of their brief they wanted a trio of entertaining spaces that flowed from one room to the next, while also incorporating their existing antique furniture.

We designed the spaces with an eclectic style, and the ratio of traditional style mixed with contemporary furniture gradually transitioned within each space to help shape a natural flow from formal to relaxed as you moved through the house.

The design included bespoke soft furnishings, re-upholstering existing antique furniture, bespoke joinery design, space planning, product sourcing and styling.

Every project we take on across Cheshire, and the North West, is different because every client is different. That individuality is something we pride ourselves on, and it’s one of the reasons our work feels fresh and personal to every project.

Luxury interiors shaped around real life

Luxury can look very different from one household to the next.

For someone with a demanding career, or someone who works from home, it might mean creating spaces that allow them to switch between their work and home life just by moving from room to room.

In our Cheshire Home Project we created a bespoke ground-floor office that featured an in-built desk and wooden shelving, set against a calming neutral colour scheme to create a focused environment for working.

Meanwhile, a living room and snug just across the hallway was designed to be a restful space, with softer textiles, plush seating, and curated lighting that naturally encourages relaxation.

Stepping across the hallway provides an immediate shift in pace and your home gives you the signal that work is done and it’s time to rest. Both rooms are luxurious. Both required thoughtful design to support their function. And both feel effortless to live in.

This is how we define luxury at Natalie Holden Interiors. Spaces that support how you live, protect your wellbeing, and allow you to feel completely at home in your own space.

Not as something taken from a Cheshire homes magazine, but as spaces that support your wellbeing, reflect your individuality and allow you to live fully and comfortably.

If you’d like to explore what luxury means to you, book a free consultation with our design team to discuss how we can support you in creating a truly authentic home.

When our clients, a couple from Cheshire, approached us in 2022, they were preparing for a significant transition in their lives. Both of their adult children had recently left for university, and they were beginning to reshape their family home into a forever home.

They felt now was the time to invest in a considered interior design scheme that suited their new lifestyle as a couple.

Their aim was to create a space that felt cohesive, calm and functional, with a clearer layout and a more contemporary feel. It had been 15 years since their last renovation and the interiors no longer supported their day-to-day routines. Several rooms needed rethinking to better support this new phase of life.

Having worked with the family before, they returned to Natalie Holden Interiors to help reconfigure the property and bring fresh clarity to the flow, purpose and atmosphere of each space.

The transformation achieved throughout the home would not only resolve the challenges of the original layout, but it would also go on to win Private Residence: Interior Decoration FF&E over £250k at the Northern Design Awards 2025.

The Challenge

The existing layout no longer aligned with how the clients used their home. Circulation across both floors felt disjointed, several rooms were underperforming, and the interiors had lost the cohesion they were seeking.

Key areas needed to be rethought, including:

• The kitchen, which needed to better support cooking, hosting and daily living.

• The utility room, which was too small and inefficient for everyday tasks.

• Bathrooms and en-suites, which required modern layouts and updated finishes.

• The first floor, which needed clearer zoning to establish two separate master bedrooms with adjoining dressing area/clothes storage & main bathroom.

• The children’s bedrooms, which needed discreet, integrated ensuite access & updating to have a more mature feel.

• Lighting and electrical planning, which needed a full rework throughout to support a calmer, more adaptable atmosphere.

• Pet-friendly considerations, which needed to be integrated without disrupting the aesthetic.

These challenges formed the foundation for a complete internal reconfiguration across both floors.

The Design Approach

The design centred on creating a more intuitive layout and a calmer atmosphere throughout the home. A warm and neutral palette, tactile finishes and natural materials were used to introduce a grounded, contemporary feel.

The entire property was redesigned in detail from lighting and electrical layouts to bespoke joinery, furniture selection, flooring, bathrooms and pet-friendly features.

Every space was given a clearer purpose, and the overall flow of the home was re-established through thoughtful spatial planning.

As a result, this Cheshire interior design project now feels cohesive from room to room, both in how it looks and how it works day to day.

A kitchen with space to cook and connect

The kitchen became a key focus of the redesign. A double island layout was introduced – one island supporting cooking and preparation, and the other acting as a space for hosting, gathering and informal work.

The design uses wooden cabinetry, marble-topped surfaces and soft upholstery, creating a warm, contemporary feel. Pendant lighting enhances the atmosphere, while the generous island layout improves functionality and flow.

The adjoining dining area is bathed in natural light, with woven textures and oversized lighting that help the space feel both intimate and open.

They were there for us every step of the way – helping with room layouts, choosing the right pieces, and sourcing furniture that suited both our style and budget. Their advice and support made the whole process so much easier, and we’re thrilled with the end result.

We’d definitely recommend Natalie Holden Interiors to anyone looking to refresh or transform their home!”

Their experience reflects what the redesign set out to achieve: a home that feels clearer in its layout, calmer in atmosphere and better suited to their lifestyle.

Spaces now flow naturally, each room has a defined purpose, and the overall scheme feels warm, contemporary and consistent throughout. The home supports hosting, quiet evenings, practical routines and future needs with ease.

The project went on to receive industry recognition, winning Private Residence: Interior Decoration FF&E over £250k at the Northern Design Awards 2025, reinforcing the quality of the interior design work throughout the home.

This case study offers a glimpse into how we approach large-scale, whole-home interior design projects in Cheshire and beyond.

In modern family homes, no space stands entirely on its own. Kitchens flow into dining areas. Living spaces open onto garden terraces. One open-plan room becomes the backdrop to a typical day for a family: entertaining, working, and unwinding.

When designed thoughtfully, these spaces don’t feel cluttered or chaotic. They feel cohesive and easy to live in.

That’s the purpose of multifunctional design.

It’s not about fitting in as much as possible – it’s about making each space feel purposeful and considered.

Whether you’re rethinking a single room or planning a full home renovation, designing with flexibility in mind helps to create a home that supports real life while looking beautifully put together.

What is multifunctional living?

Multifunctional living means creating spaces that serve more than one role, purpose or function without losing their sense of style or simplicity.

In a modern family home, that might look like:

• An open-plan kitchen with a central island where everything from weekday breakfasts to evening drinks happen

• A dining space that can shift easily from school projects to dinner parties

• A family living area that’s set up for playing, relaxing and hosting

• A snug or quiet lounge designed for switching off

• Oversized doors opening onto a garden that feels like part of the home, indoor-outdoor living

It’s less about being clever and more about being intentional by designing rooms that reflect how you actually live.

1. Plan your layout to support everyday life

Multifunctionality starts with flow. In an open-plan home, layout is what helps a space feel calm rather than chaotic.

A well-thought-out layout creates natural zones without blocking sightlines or adding clutter. It encourages movement while helping each part of the space feel grounded.

Things to think about:

• Use natural focal points (like a kitchen island, fireplace, or a garden view) to guide how the room is arranged

• Position seating thoughtfully, whether that’s around a TV, a coffee table, or a conversation area

• Leave space to move, especially when little ones, guests or pets are part of the mix

• Add built-in storage that blends into the design while keeping everyday clutter out of sight

A space with good flow doesn’t just look better. It feels better to be in.

2. Choose furniture that adapts with ease

The best furniture in a multifunctional space is the kind that fits your layout, supports your lifestyle and adds something visually to the room.

Look for:

• Large dining tables that can seat a crowd but don’t overwhelm the space

• Kitchen islands with built-in storage and seating, so they’re just as useful for weekday breakfasts as they are for entertaining

• Modular sofas that offer flexibility without feeling overly casual

• Smaller pieces like pouffes, sideboards or drinks trolleys that provide function without fuss

Nothing should feel purely decorative, but everything should feel considered.

3. Use materials that are both practical and refined

In spaces that see everyday use, it’s best to choose materials that can take the wear without losing their look.

That doesn’t mean compromising on design. It just means thinking a step ahead so that your home stays looking its best over time.

Consider:

• Stain-resistant fabrics in neutral tones or rich textures for a lived-in, yet polished feel

• Hardwearing flooring like engineered wood or luxury vinyl tiles for areas that see a lot of footfall

• Quartz or composite worktops that hold up well in busy kitchens

• Wipeable paints in matt finishes – especially on lower walls where fingerprints tend to appear

These kinds of choices help keep your home looking fresh, no matter what life throws at it.

4. Let lighting do the heavy lifting

Lighting makes a huge difference in how a space feels and how it works across different uses.

Rather than relying on one overhead light, aim for a mix of sources that you can adjust depending on the time of day or what’s happening in the room.

Think about:

• Brighter task lighting for food prep or work zones

• Soft ambient lighting for relaxed evenings

• Feature lighting over key areas like the dining table or island

• Accent lighting built into shelving or cabinetry for extra warmth and depth

The right lighting lets a space change mood without changing anything else.

5. Use texture and tone to define each area

In open-plan spaces, using colour and texture thoughtfully can help shape different areas without disrupting the overall look.

Try:

• A darker paint colour or wallpaper in a corner lounge to create a more intimate feel

• Natural wood tones to warm up cooler materials in a kitchen setting

• Layered textiles like cushions, rugs and throws to add softness and make a space feel more inviting

• Open shelving or wall panelling to add depth and a sense of structure

These layers help each zone feel distinct, but still part of the same space.

6. Don’t overlook the quiet spaces

When the main living area is designed to be open and multifunctional, it’s often the smaller rooms that bring balance.

A quiet sitting room, home office or reading nook gives you somewhere to step away – whether that’s to unwind, concentrate, or simply enjoy a moment of calm.

These spaces don’t need to be large or overly styled. They just need to feel welcoming and well-considered. A place where the pace slows, even if only for a short while.

7. Make the most of outdoor space

In many modern family homes, the garden isn’t a separate space – it’s part of how the home functions.

When the design flows from indoors to out, it opens up even more possibilities for how a space can be used.

Consider:

• Covered seating areas for year-round use

• Outdoor kitchens or built-in BBQs for entertaining

• Integrated lighting and zoning to carry the interior atmosphere outside

• Storage benches or planters that keep things tidy while still feeling stylish

These outdoor zones extend the home’s functionality and make the most of every square metre.

Design that keeps up with modern life

Multifunctional living doesn’t mean packing in as much as you can. It means designing spaces that feel good to be in, respond to real life, support daily routines, and look consistently considered, whatever they’re being used for.

Whether it’s a kitchen island the world revolves around, or a separate lounge that offers a quiet contrast, the aim is the same: to create a home that’s not just beautiful, but easy to live in.

Ready to plan your own renovation?

If you’re thinking about redesigning your space, our free Home Renovation Guide contains everything you need to know to get started.

• Think function first: Beautiful pieces need to support how you live. Consider your daily routine alongside aesthetics.

• Take time: These stores reward browsing. The staff understand design and can offer valuable perspective on how pieces work in real homes.

Why Cheshire interior shops are worth the visit

Good interior design balances beauty with function. These Cheshire retailers understand this balance, which is why they’re some of our favourites.

Whether you’re drawn to Rose and Grey’s timeless approach, Oka’s globally inspired collections, Arlo & Jacob’s handcrafted luxury, Naturalmat’s natural sleep solutions, Loaf’s relaxed comfort, RI Home’s Mediterranean elegance, or Neptune’s coastal practicality, each offers pieces that support how you actually live.

What do these stores all have in common? They understand design isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about creating spaces that enhance your daily life. These Cheshire interior design shops deliver on both fronts.

Open-plan living has become one of the most popular home layouts, and it’s easy to see why. It creates a greater sense of space, improves natural light, and makes everyday life feel more sociable.

In fact, according to research by Resi, around 6.25 million homes in the UK have open-plan living spaces.

But while the appeal is clear, designing an open-plan space that works well isn’t always as straightforward as people anticipate.

Many homeowners extend their property or knock through walls to create open-plan living spaces, only to realise mid-build that they haven’t considered key details like zoning, layout, or lighting. At that stage, options become more limited, and compromises have to be made.

To help you avoid these common mistakes and get your open-plan space right from the outset, Natalie is sharing her expertise throughout this blog, offering practical tips on how to create an open-plan space that flows well and works for your home and lifestyle.

Zoning: Creating defined spaces without walls

A well-designed open-plan space should feel open and connected, but that doesn’t mean it should lack structure.

Without clear zoning, the space can feel chaotic, making it harder to create defined areas for different activities.

Natalie says: “Clients often come to us after their extension is already in progress, having planned it with their architect, and they’re panicking because they can’t decide how to zone (divide) their space.

“At that stage, we’re already working within restrictions when it comes to interior design, and this means that compromises have to be made. Instead of waiting, planning zoning from the outset makes all the difference, so make sure an interior designer is involved in those initial conversations with your architect.”

There are a few simple ways to create clear zones while keeping an open feel:

– Furniture placement: Arrange furniture so that each area works independently while still feeling connected to the space as a whole.

– Rugs: Using rugs to ground different areas, such as living and dining spaces, helps create visual separation.

– Lighting: Layered lighting allows each zone to have its own atmosphere and function while maintaining overall cohesion.

– Bespoke joinery or statement features: Fireplaces, shelving units, or subtle partitions can add definition without blocking the flow of the space.

Getting zoning right from the start ensures that the space remains practical, balanced, and well-proportioned.

Layout and flow: Making the space work practically

A beautiful open-plan design is one thing, but if it’s not practical for day-to-day life, it won’t have the impact it should.

Without careful layout planning, a space can feel overcrowded, awkward to navigate, or disconnected from how it’s actually used.

Natalie says: “People often try to fit too many things within one space and don’t realise their extension hasn’t been planned to be big enough to accommodate everything they want.

“We also see clients buying the wrong scale furniture – either too big and overwhelming or too small so it gets lost in the space.”

When planning your layout, consider:

– Spacing between key areas: Ensure there’s enough room between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces for ease of movement.

– Clear walkways: Avoid obstructing natural flow with misplaced furniture or poorly planned storage.

– Furniture proportions: Choosing the right scale of furniture ensures balance—too big can overwhelm the space, too small can make it feel empty.

One common issue is planning the kitchen in isolation. Many homeowners work directly with a kitchen company, focusing on maximising storage without considering how the kitchen will interact with the rest of the space. This can result in too many units, leaving little flexibility for other zones.

Another mistake is finalising plug sockets, lighting, and radiators too early, before deciding on the furniture layout. This often leads to impractical placements that don’t work with how the space is actually used.

Lighting for function and atmosphere

Lighting plays a crucial role in open-plan living, defining different areas while bringing the space together.

The right lighting scheme should allow for flexibility, providing both practical task lighting and softer mood lighting where needed.

Natalie says: “Lighting is so important in an open-plan space because it needs to work for each individual zone while still interacting as a whole.

“We always recommend smart lighting, as it allows for multiple zones to be controlled independently, giving the flexibility to change the mood and ambience across an open-plan space.”

To get lighting right, think about:

– Layering light sources: A mix of ceiling lights, wall lights, floor lamps, and task lighting ensures flexibility. Learn more about layering lighting here.

– Creating ambience: Dimmable lighting and warm tones help make living spaces feel inviting, especially in the evenings.

– Maximising natural light: Thoughtful window placement and carefully places mirrors enhance brightness and make the space feel more open.

Leaving lighting as an afterthought is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make. Too often, plug sockets and lighting placements are planned before furniture layouts, leading to impractical setups.

Thinking about lighting early on ensures it works both functionally and aesthetically.

Other common misconceptions, and how to avoid them

Open-plan spaces can be a dream when designed well, but there are a few key misconceptions people tend to fall for.

Natalie says: “People often think they can do it all themselves and only realise halfway through that there are far more decisions to make than they anticipated.

“Things like plug socket and lighting placements are often planned too soon, before the furniture layout is finalised, which leads to impractical setups.”

Here are some of the most common mistakes we see:

– Underestimating acoustics: Hard surfaces amplify noise, making open-plan spaces feel loud. Soft furnishings, rugs, and acoustic panels can help absorb sound.

– Lack of storage: Without built-in solutions, open-plan spaces can quickly become cluttered. Well-integrated storage helps maintain a streamlined look.

– Trying to fit too much in: Many people overestimate how much their space can accommodate, leading to a cramped and impractical layout.

– Assuming an extension is the only solution: Sometimes, knocking down a wall or reconfiguring an existing layout can achieve the same effect without the cost and disruption of a full extension. A consultation with an interior designer can help explore all the possibilities before committing to major work.

A well-designed open-plan space should feel functional, seamless, and tailored to how you live. It should offer balance and support your lifestyle. Getting it right means considering zoning, layout, and lighting from the start – not making rushed decisions mid-build.

If you’re planning an open-plan redesign, booking a consultation early in the process can help ensure your space is designed with function and flow in mind. A little expert guidance at the start can save time, money, and a lot of stress further down the line.

What is a ‘wellbeing interior’?

Since the pandemic, we have all learnt the importance which our wellbeing plays in our lives. We have also put emphasis on valuing, cherishing and enjoying our homes in which we spend so much of our time! Many people have revamped their homes during this period but we are no longer wanting just somewhere we sleep, eat, entertain etc! We would all like our habitat to be a place of solace, comfort and contentment which is how we should feel when we are truly happy in our home environment.

Therefore, in recent times, both interior designers and scientists have done a lot of research into the factors of how our homes can enhance our wellbeing; not only by making our homes look beautiful but by combining the thinking and philosophies behind biophillic design, colour psychology, human biology to name a few, to inspire thoughtful design decisions which support the overall health and wellbeing of a person’s mind, body and soul.

The intended benefits of a wellbeing interior include improved cognitive functions such as concentration, productivity and creativity plus an enriched mood and reduced anxiety! These well designed homes aim to promote harmony and balance for the people who live in it; helping to calm the mind, benefit from positive emotions and also embracing the occupants personality.

I think we could all do with some wellness in our lives so why not incorporate it into the place you spend the most time?

Below are our five key points which will help you create your very own wellbeing interior…..

Choosing sustainable materials…..

Holistic design is built on a thoughtful and respectful approach to materials. Choosing to avoid the use of all synthetic materials in favour of natural linens, leathers, jute, wool, wood, bamboo and cork for example, will help to create a harmonious palette of textures, colours and patterns. Many of these materials also evoke a strong connection with nature and the earth.

As a bonus, if we choose to use bio-based or recycled materials it ensures we have minimal environmental impact!

Also, creating a multi-sensory experience using sound, scent, texture and colour all adds to a setting which can be especially powerful in wellness terms as they provide an immersive experience by allowing us to engage all our senses!

Use colours which create a restorative space: think soft, earthy tones that are grounded and which are visible colours within nature; these will be your most effective choices.

However, in colour psychology, all colours evoke emotions; green’s tie into nature, blue’s are calming, yellow’s symbolise happiness & white’s promote calmness; just remember to always keep hue’s muted and soft in this instance.

Natural light is an essential building block for good health. We require constant moderate levels of Vitamin D to boost our overall mood and energy levels.

Whilst maximising natural light in our homes is largely the architect’s role however for those with existing homes, we can help in a number of ways.

Choose window treatments which allow light to spill through and also by choosing colours and materials to bounce light around a space.

Pay attention to your furniture layout, ensure you aren’t blocking windows/doors with furniture.

If you don’t have many windows at home, gadgets such as sunrise clocks mimic the natural cycle of the sun rising and have proven to significantly help to wake our bodies and minds naturally.

Good air quality…..

Good quality air in our homes is helpful in several ways. Going back to material choices; by using natural materials we can also ensure there are no chemicals or toxins on furnishings/textiles which we come into close contact with.

Having air purifying plants dotted around the home such as the ‘Peace Lily’, ‘Aloe Vera’, ‘Spider Plant’ & the ‘Boston Fern’ can help to remove toxins from the air whilst looking appealing and bringing nature indoors.

Finally, good ventilation is always helpful. Opening windows and allowing air into your rooms helps to freshen up the spaces, moving air around the home and removing stagnant air at the same time!

Biophilia is a hypothesis which suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life.

Therefore, surrounding yourself with plants in your interior, preferably at a variety of heights and a mix of styles, can significantly reduce anxiety, improve mood whilst enhancing concentration and creativity output.

Finally, there is countless amounts of research to show that reconnecting with nature visually is extremely good for your wellbeing!

Be it outdoors on a balcony or garden, to simply be directly exposed to natural light or subsequently, to be indoors but around plants, trees and even aquariums (if you have no access to outdoor space).
