My first 10 seconds at Telfit Farm; you notice it before you’ve unpacked. The door closes behind you and the air is different – fresher, stiller, carrying something faintly mineral from the stone walls. There’s no background hum of traffic. Just the wind on the moor and, somewhere beyond the house, water moving over rocks.

Telfit Farm is a restored 19th-century Georgian farmhouse in a glacial bowl in Swaledale. My partner Clark runs small group wellness retreats across the UK , and I joined one there earlier this year. It’s 650 acres of moorland in the Yorkshire Dales; the kind of place where your phone loses signal and your shoulders drop before anyone’s told you to relax.

I went as a guest. But within half an hour I was running my hand along door frames and crouching to look at skirting details, because whoever restored this farmhouse understood something that most renovations miss. They hadn’t just made a beautiful house. They’d made a house that changes how you feel the moment you step inside it.

The Leathams, who bought Telfit in 2016, restored it so well it ended up on the cover of Living in Country Style. But what interested me wasn’t the photography. It was what the photographs can’t capture, the atmosphere of the rooms, the texture of the surfaces, the way the whole place seems to slow your breathing down without you noticing.

Surfaces You Can Feel

The first thing I touched was the exterior wall. Uneven and raw stone, cool under my palm, with a texture you’d never get from a smoothly rendered house. In the hallway, the intricately panelled walls add layers and depth captured by the soft natural light streaming through the doorway, the open fireplace in the lounge looks original, not just a hole cut into a chimney breast and fitted with a log burner, but the real thing, blackened and deep. You can smell the ash and age in the stone around it.

The bathrooms have roll-top baths with brass taps. The kitchen has an Aga set into what feels like the spine of the house, alongside marble worktops and a range cooker. The floors shift between natural stone, timber and jute as you move room to room. There’s intricately patterned wallpaper inspired by nature across some of the smaller rooms, antique furniture throughout, striking artwork and small things everywhere – bird statues, a hare on a side table – that feel like they were curated over years rather than in a single delivery from the same shop.

None of it is uniform. And that’s exactly why it works. When every surface has its own weight and grain, your body registers the space as real. You settle into it physically. Compare that with a room full of smooth, identical finishes – laminate, composite, machine-perfect plaster, and you might not be able to say what’s wrong, but something feels thin.

You don’t need a Georgian farmhouse to get this right. A limewashed wall instead of standard emulsion. Solid timber shelves instead of MDF. Linen that actually drapes instead of holding itself rigid. These are small material decisions, but your hands know the difference even when your eyes don’t.

Light That Knows What Time It Is

On the first morning I came downstairs early, before anyone else was up. The Georgian windows let in a soft, cool light that made the hallway feel almost blue. By the time we’d finished breakfast the kitchen was warm and bright, sun hitting the marble and bouncing off the Aga. And by evening, fire lit in the drawing room, table lamps on, candles along the dining table, the same walls that had looked cool at dawn were glowing amber.

Nobody changed anything. The space did it by itself, because it had been wired to allow it. Multiple circuits, different light sources at different heights, dimmers on everything that mattered. The room could be three or four different rooms depending on the hour.

Most homes I work on have one lighting state before we start: a pendant in the centre of the ceiling and a floor lamp in the corner. One mood, permanently. That’s not a taste problem, it’s a wiring problem, and the reason we always plan lighting early in a renovation, while the walls are open and before the electrician is already on site. Getting multiple circuits and dimmer switches into the right places is part of the build, not something you add afterwards. But once it’s done, you never think about the wiring. You just notice that the room feels completely different at nine in the evening than it did at nine in the morning.

Room to Do Nothing

16 people stayed at Telfit that weekend. Ten bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a drawing room, a TV room with a wood burner, a kitchen that seats fourteen with a separate dining space for eight more. On paper, it should have felt like a hotel. In practice, it felt like a home, a generous one, but a home.

The reason was space that hadn’t been filled. The conservatory at the end of the kitchen looks straight out into the glacial bowl, and someone had resisted the urge to fill every cm with furniture in it. You could stand there with a coffee and just watch the light move across the moor. The hallway was wide enough to pause in. The dining table had room around it, you weren’t pressed up against the person beside you.

I see the opposite in most of the homes I start working on. Every square metre gets a job. Furniture pushed against walls. Shelves filled to capacity. Surfaces covered. It comes from a good instinct, people want their space to work hard; but the result is rooms that feel smaller than they are.

Retreat spaces feel restful partly because they have less in them. The gap between pieces, the clear surface, the room with nothing in it except good light and one comfortable chair – those aren’t wasted. They’re doing the most important work in the house.

Where the House Ends and the Land Begins

On the second morning I took my tea out through the French windows in the kitchen and stood on the terrace. Below me, the garden sloped down to the beck where people had been wild swimming the day before. Beyond that, moorland. No fence, no boundary wall, no point where the property announced itself as separate from the landscape.

Inside, the conservatory framed that same view like a painting you could walk into. The stone and timber inside the house echoed the environment outside. The transition from kitchen to terrace to garden to moor felt continuous – one long breath, not a series of doors.

Most homes treat the garden as a separate project. Inside is the designer’s territory; outside is someone else’s problem. But the best residential spaces I’ve worked on treat the view from the window as part of the room. Even if your outdoor space is a small courtyard or a Juliet balcony, what you see through the glass matters. A pot with structural planting. A material that connects back to your interior palette. That continuity — inside and outside having the same conversation – is what makes a home feel whole.

What I Took Home

On the drive back to Manchester I kept thinking about what Telfit Farm had got right. It wasn’t the money; the Leathams had clearly invested, but the impact wasn’t necessarily achieved by how much money was spent. It was coherent. Every room connected to the next. The materials had been chosen to age, not just to photograph. And someone had left room for nothing to happen, for fire to crackle, for light to move across a wall, for a group of strangers to sit in comfortable silence after dinner because the space allowed it.

That’s what good design does. Not more. Just more intentionally. A restful home doesn’t need a spa bathroom or a meditation room. It needs materials with texture, light that moves, space to breathe, and a connection to whatever’s outside the window.

If you’ve ever walked into a room and felt something shift, your breathing slowed, your mind went quiet – that wasn’t the room being lucky. That was good design.

If you want to experience Telfit Farm or The Waterfall Chapel for yourself, Clark at Insider Retreats runs small group, 4 day wellness retreats in carefully chosen venues across the UK.

I can vouch for the food, the yoga, and the feeling of walking through that front door after three hours on the road.

And if you’re starting to think about how your own home could feel different, how a renovation could give you that same sense of arriving somewhere that works – our Renovation Strategy Session is where that conversation begins.

When you think about luxury interiors, what comes to your mind? Mirrored finishes? Crystals? Diamonds? Crushed velvet? Brand labels?

Across Cheshire, there’s an image of ‘luxury’ that results in spaces that look impressive, but leave you feeling like a guest in your own home. You’re constantly conscious of mess, noise, wear and tear, and you end up feeling like everyday life needs to be carefully managed rather than enjoyed.

That version of luxury has never really aligned with how we see things at Natalie Holden Interiors. We believe luxury is something you feel, not something you show.

It’s that exhale after a long day at work, when you walk through the door, kick off your shoes and sink into the sofa ready to binge your latest Netflix obsession. It’s a space where the family finally comes together after a busy week, reconnecting and catching up over a Sunday roast. It’s a feeling of safety and security. A place where you can drop your guard and be yourself.

Luxury is about enhancing your wellbeing, and your home should actively support that.

How we build the feeling of luxury

That feeling of luxury doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of continuous conversations with our clients and hundreds of carefully considered design choices, all coming together to make life feel easier.

Our luxury interiors are always planned with one crucial goal in mind: to support how you function and how you feel living in your home.

As a studio, we begin by listening. Not just to what you like visually, but to how you live day to day. We ask questions that get beneath the surface:

– How are you living now?

– How do you need your home to support you?

– Where does life feel busy, messy, overwhelming or restrictive?

These conversations shape everything that follows. They allow us to design with intention rather than assumption, and to build homes that respond to real life rather than an Instagram-ready version of it.

Without this understanding, even the most beautiful space can feel frustrating. When homes aren’t designed around real routines, daily life becomes harder.

Putting quality, longevity and meaning at the forefront

One of the clearest ways we build that sense of luxury is through quality and longevity. We’re not interested in finishes that look impressive on day one but cause stress six months later because they’re falling apart, or have been worn down quickly by daily family use. You shouldn’t have to worry about spills or hesitate before using a space properly.

Instead, we focus on sourcing materials that age well, adapt over time and support everyone occupying the home.

A solid wood dining table, for example, provides an adaptable surface for work, dining, and creative activities with the kids. Over time it becomes a central hub where stories are exchanged and memories are formed. It becomes a heart within the home. And when it’s in need of an aesthetic refresh, it can be sanded down and re-stained.

We apply the same thinking to sourcing. Wherever possible, we work with local suppliers, craftspeople and makers. There’s a depth of connection that comes from knowing where something was made, who made it, and that it was made well. Clients often tell us there’s reassurance in that process – a confidence in knowing their home has been built thoughtfully, not hurriedly.

Homes should feel personal, not like a display

Luxury should never feel anonymous. We often integrate vintage or antique pieces into our designs, not to create a particular look, but to add character and individuality. These unique pieces can really ground a space and prevent it from feeling overly polished or staged.

That said, luxury isn’t defined by owning antiques. A home without them can still feel incredibly luxurious if it reflects the people who live there. What matters most is personality. Existing furniture, artwork and objects that hold meaning are often some of the most important items in a home. They carry memory, identity and emotion, and they anchor a space in your real life.

This is how we avoid creating interiors that feel like show homes. When a design reflects your life through the past, present and future, it naturally feels more comfortable and more authentic.

Designing for adaptability and everyday ease

Life changes, and your home needs to be able to change with it.

We design with adaptability in mind, ensuring spaces can evolve as routines shift, families grow or priorities change. That flexibility is a key part of what makes a home feel supportive rather than restrictive. You no longer have to constantly adapt yourself to the space – instead, the home adapts with you, offering reassurance as life changes rather than becoming another source of pressure.

Function plays a huge role here. Storage that genuinely works. Layouts that allow movement and flow. Spaces where everything has a purpose. When a home is designed properly, daily routines feel simplified and less mentally demanding. That ease is often what people describe as luxury (even if they don’t realise it straight away).

Being able to use every space in your home, without stress or hesitation, is one of the most understated forms of luxury there is.

We don’t chase trends

You won’t find us promoting a signature style at Natalie Holden Interiors, and that’s entirely intentional.

We don’t believe luxury interior design should force a particular aesthetic onto a home. Trends come and go, but the way you live is far more important. Our role is to build homes around people, not to mould people around a style.

That doesn’t mean we ignore trends completely. We enjoy selecting the right elements that help you express your personality and bring joy, but only when they genuinely serve you and will stand the test of time.

Borrowing elements from trends and blending them together can create something wonderfully unique. Style should support individuality, not override it.

For example, our client had been living in their property for 15 years when they decided to remove their old conservatory and add an extension. As part of their brief they wanted a trio of entertaining spaces that flowed from one room to the next, while also incorporating their existing antique furniture.

We designed the spaces with an eclectic style, and the ratio of traditional style mixed with contemporary furniture gradually transitioned within each space to help shape a natural flow from formal to relaxed as you moved through the house.

The design included bespoke soft furnishings, re-upholstering existing antique furniture, bespoke joinery design, space planning, product sourcing and styling.

Every project we take on across Cheshire, and the North West, is different because every client is different. That individuality is something we pride ourselves on, and it’s one of the reasons our work feels fresh and personal to every project.

Luxury interiors shaped around real life

Luxury can look very different from one household to the next.

For someone with a demanding career, or someone who works from home, it might mean creating spaces that allow them to switch between their work and home life just by moving from room to room.

In our Cheshire Home Project we created a bespoke ground-floor office that featured an in-built desk and wooden shelving, set against a calming neutral colour scheme to create a focused environment for working.

Meanwhile, a living room and snug just across the hallway was designed to be a restful space, with softer textiles, plush seating, and curated lighting that naturally encourages relaxation.

Stepping across the hallway provides an immediate shift in pace and your home gives you the signal that work is done and it’s time to rest. Both rooms are luxurious. Both required thoughtful design to support their function. And both feel effortless to live in.

This is how we define luxury at Natalie Holden Interiors. Spaces that support how you live, protect your wellbeing, and allow you to feel completely at home in your own space.

Not as something taken from a Cheshire homes magazine, but as spaces that support your wellbeing, reflect your individuality and allow you to live fully and comfortably.

If you’d like to explore what luxury means to you, book a free consultation with our design team to discuss how we can support you in creating a truly authentic home.

Not every home is blessed with floor-to-ceiling windows or sun-drenched spaces, but that doesn’t mean they can’t feel bright, open, and uplifting.

Light has a big impact on how we feel in our surroundings. It influences our mood, feeds our energy, and helps us feel more connected to the spaces we live in.

When light moves naturally through a room, it changes the way we feel. Mornings are more energising. Unwinding in the evening is easier. Textures come to life and colours reveal their depth. There’s a sense of calm and spaciousness that makes even the most familiar corners feel refreshed.

There are plenty of ways to brighten a dark room.

With a few thoughtful design decisions, you can enhance the light you already have to make your space feel brighter, warmer, and more balanced throughout the day.

Here’s how our designers recommend doing just that.

Start with a lighter foundation

Your walls set the tone for the entire space.

Lighter colours reflect more light, making a room immediately feel more open and airy. Shades of soft white, warm beige, or pale neutral are great options, helping to enhance brightness without feeling cold or clinical.

For added warmth and depth, look for undertones that complement your natural light levels – a creamy neutral can soften cooler light, while a gentle hint of peach or grey brings sophistication to smaller spaces. Even lightening the ceiling or a single feature wall can subtly change the overall feel of the room.

Once your base palette is right, you can start to think about how surfaces interact with the light around them.

Reflect and redirect

Mirrors, metallic accents, and glossy finishes all help to reflect and diffuse brightness throughout a space.

For example, positioning mirrors opposite or adjacent to windows will help maximise daylight, whereas placing them near a lamp will double the glow in the evening.

These reflective touches create balance and movement by catching light from different angles and guiding it through the space, brightening a dark room.

When planned thoughtfully, even compact or awkwardly shaped rooms can appear larger and lighter. It’s not just about what colour you choose, but how the whole scheme works together to direct light evenly.

Let the daylight in: Natural ways to brighten a dark room

When it comes to natural light, every detail counts – including what frames your windows.

Heavy fabrics or dark colours can make a room feel smaller and block out valuable daylight. Choosing sheer or light-filtering curtains allows light to flow freely while still offering privacy.

Linen and voile are both beautiful options that soften direct sunlight and fill a room with a subtle, diffused glow. For flexibility, try layering sheer panels with lighter blinds so you can adjust the level of light throughout the day.

How you dress your windows affects the entire feeling of a room. By keeping the space around them clear and avoiding bulky furniture or clutter, you draw the eye outward, extending the sense of openness beyond the glass.

Even small changes, like choosing lighter curtain poles or mounting them higher and wider than the window frame, can help the room appear taller and brighter.

Layer your lighting

Artificial lighting plays an equally important role in creating mood and atmosphere. It isn’t just about adding brightness – it’s about adding dimension.

Start with a central light source for overall illumination, then build layers around it.

Wall lights add soft, ambient glow, while table and floor lamps define different zones and bring warmth into corners that might otherwise feel flat.

Accent lighting can also highlight features like artwork, shelving, or textured walls, drawing attention to details that give your space personality.

The temperature of your bulbs also makes a difference. Warm white tones (around 2700–3000K) create a natural, welcoming quality, while cooler whites can appear stark in darker spaces.

In open-plan rooms, consider installing dimmers or smart lighting systems so you can adapt the ambience from bright and functional during the day to relaxed and intimate after dark.

A layered lighting plan turns a space from purely practical into something atmospheric – a room that works for reading, socialising, and slowing down at the end of the day.

Keep furniture and finishes light and balanced

Furniture and materials also play a huge part in how light behaves in your home. Dark, heavy pieces tend to absorb brightness, while lighter tones and softer textures help lift it.

If you’re working with a darker scheme, balance it with pale flooring, neutral upholstery, or reflective surfaces like glass and brushed metal. Light-toned woods, woven textures, and natural materials add warmth and tactility without weighing a room down.

It’s also worth considering the overall layout.

A clear line of sight through a space helps it feel more spacious and open, allowing the light to move freely. Where possible, choose furniture with slimmer silhouettes or raised legs – these subtle details create a sense of air and flow.

A mix of matte and gloss finishes let light interact in interesting ways, while metallic accents (brass handles, chrome frames) add highlights that shimmer gently as you move through the room.

This balance of softness and shine creates depth and stops lighter palettes from feeling flat and subtly helps a dark room feel brighter.

Recap: How to brighten a dark room

A brighter home isn’t just about what you see – it’s about how it feels. When light flows effortlessly through a space, it lifts your mood, improves focus, and helps you unwind more easily.

When you walk into a room, what’s the first thing you notice? The furniture? The finishes? The bespoke joinery?

Consciously, you might focus on those larger design elements, but subconsciously, your mind is absorbing something else: colour.

Colour holds a lot of power in interior design. It can impact your mood, change how spacious a room feels, and create balance between the architecture, lighting and materials.

It’s a subtle, yet powerful element of design – one we use to shape not only how a space looks, but how it feels to live in.

When designing a space, colour choices are never incidental. They’re carefully considered as part of the wider design strategy that ensures each palette enhances the atmosphere and emotional experience of the home.

What is colour psychology?

Colour psychology explores how different hues influence our emotions, behaviour and overall sense of wellbeing.

The tones we surround ourselves with can encourage calm, focus or creativity, and that means colour plays a much bigger role in how we experience a space than most people realise.

Studies in environmental psychology suggest that cooler tones, such as blue, are often linked to calmness and concentration, while warmer shades like red and orange tend to heighten energy and alertness. It’s one of the reasons why offices often lean towards cooler palettes, while restaurants and social spaces use warmer hues to create a sense of vibrancy and connection.

As designers, understanding this provides a foundation for making intentional colour choices – ones that enhance mood, balance atmosphere and reflect how a home is meant to feel.

Why colour psychology matters in interior design

In high-end interior design, every detail works together to create a mood. Colour is one of the most impactful ways to shape that feeling. It influences light, depth, and even the way we perceive proportion.

A considered colour palette can:

• Make a space feel more balanced. Cool tones tend to recede visually, creating a sense of openness, while warmer hues advance and make larger areas feel cosier.

• Encourage relaxation or productivity. The colours that surround us can support how we live. They can help us unwind in bedrooms or stay energised in workspaces.

• Define open-plan living zones. Subtle variations in tone can signal a shift from one function to another, maintaining flow without visual disruption.

A home designed with colour psychology in mind feels calm, cohesive and personal – not because everything matches, but because everything belongs.

The emotional influence of different colours

While personal taste plays a role in colour selection, there are broad emotional associations supported by design research and colour theory.

Understanding these helps designers choose hues that not only look refined, but support how you want to feel in your home.

• Blue creates calm, clarity and trust. It’s ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms or studies where relaxation or focus is key. Paler blues expand space and feel airy, while deeper shades bring intimacy and elegance.

• Green symbolises balance, renewal and connection to nature. Perfect for living rooms or garden-facing spaces. Muted sage and olive tones are particularly grounding and timeless.

• Red conveys energy and warmth. It can spark conversation in social areas but can feel overpowering in large doses. Red is often incorporated through art, textiles or a feature wall to add vibrancy without dominating.

• Yellow radiates optimism and brightness. When used thoughtfully, it can bring joy and energy to kitchens or hallways, especially where natural light enhances its warmth.

• Neutrals – soft whites, taupes and warm greys – create clarity and calm, acting as a backdrop for layered textures and materials.

• Charcoal and black accents add depth, structure and sophistication. Used sparingly, they help anchor lighter schemes and create contrast.

Lighting plays a key role here too. The same paint colour can appear entirely different depending on whether a room faces north or south. That’s why it’s so important to test samples in natural and artificial light before making a final decision (a process designers never skip).

How designers apply colour psychology in practice

Designing with colour psychology in mind isn’t about following rigid rules or chasing trends. It’s about understanding how colour interacts with light, space and the way you live.

Every decision starts by asking how a room should feel, not just how it should look.

Once that intention is clear, we can use colour to support it.

A bedroom designed for rest might lean towards cooler, desaturated tones that promote calm, while an entertaining space might feature warmer, more sociable hues that encourage conversation and connection.

Continuity throughout a home is also important. Subtle variations of tone can create a sense of flow from one room to another, allowing each space to have its own character without feeling disconnected from the rest of the home.

The trick is to maintain a visual rhythm – repeating undertones, balancing light and shadow, and creating subtle transitions rather than stark contrasts.

Light, both natural and artificial, plays a defining role in how colour reads.

South-facing rooms can handle cooler tones that balance bright daylight, while north-facing spaces often benefit from warmer shades to counteract cooler light.

Materials and finishes also influence perception; a matte wall absorbs light to create softness, whereas a gloss or satin surface reflects it, adding brightness and energy.

Finally, every palette is refined through testing – watching how a colour shifts throughout the day, and how it interacts with furnishings, flooring and natural light. It’s this process of observation and adjustment that makes sure the final scheme feels timeless and authentic.

Common mistakes people make with colour

Even with a strong sense of style, getting colour right can be surprisingly complex. A few of the most common mistakes include:

• Choosing colours in isolation: A shade that looks perfect on a paint chart might clash with your flooring, fabrics or natural light. Always view it in context.

• Forgetting about undertones: Neutrals often carry subtle warm or cool undertones. Mixing the two without intention can make a scheme feel off-balance.

• Relying too heavily on trends: Trending colours can date quickly. Timeless palettes grounded in emotion and architecture tend to feel more authentic.

• Not testing colours in real light: Paint can shift dramatically between daylight and lamplight. Observing it at different times of day is the only way to know how it will truly live in a space.

• Overusing bold colours: Saturated tones make strong statements, but too many competing colours can feel overwhelming.

An interior designer’s role is to bring confidence and clarity to these choices ensuring every colour feels right for the space and for the people who live in it.

Bringing it all together

Colour psychology isn’t about theory for theory’s sake. It’s about creating spaces that feel intuitive and emotionally connected to the people who inhabit them.

When colour, texture and light all work together, a home feels calm, cohesive and unmistakably personal.

The right palette can lift your mood, enhance functionality, and add lasting value to your space proving that colour, when used with intention, really does make a house feel like home.

Choosing the right paint is a lot like choosing the right outfit for your home. The colour, the finish, the texture – it all sets the tone for how you’ll feel in the space every day.

The difference between a tin of budget paint and a premium brand isn’t just how it looks fresh on the wall, but how it wears, how it ages, and how it transforms the character of a room.

Premium paints tend to offer richer pigments, more durable finishes, and eco-friendly formulas that make a real difference over time. They’re an investment, but one that pays off in both style and substance.

In Cheshire, there may only be a handful of dedicated premium paint showrooms, but they’re carefully curated, each with something unique to offer.

And if you prefer to order online, there are a couple of brilliant brands we often recommend to clients when we’re specifying finishes – so keep reading for those.

Here are five of our best options if you’re renovating or redecorating in Cheshire (and beyond).

Our quick paint buying guide

Before you head to the showroom or start ordering swatches online, it helps to go in with a plan. A few things we recommend to clients:

• Take samples home: Colours look different in natural daylight versus showroom lighting, so always test in your own space.

• Think about finish as well as colour: Matt, eggshell, and gloss all have very different effects and durability.

• Don’t underestimate neutrals: A perfectly balanced neutral can be just as impactful as a bold accent colour.

• Consider the feel of the room: Light levels, size, and how you use the space will all affect how a paint appears and performs.

• Ask about eco-friendly formulas: Many premium brands now offer low-VOC paints that are kinder to your home and the planet.

A little preparation makes paint shopping more enjoyable and ensures you come away with a shade (and finish) that truly suits your home.

In modern family homes, no space stands entirely on its own. Kitchens flow into dining areas. Living spaces open onto garden terraces. One open-plan room becomes the backdrop to a typical day for a family: entertaining, working, and unwinding.

When designed thoughtfully, these spaces don’t feel cluttered or chaotic. They feel cohesive and easy to live in.

That’s the purpose of multifunctional design.

It’s not about fitting in as much as possible – it’s about making each space feel purposeful and considered.

Whether you’re rethinking a single room or planning a full home renovation, designing with flexibility in mind helps to create a home that supports real life while looking beautifully put together.

What is multifunctional living?

Multifunctional living means creating spaces that serve more than one role, purpose or function without losing their sense of style or simplicity.

In a modern family home, that might look like:

• An open-plan kitchen with a central island where everything from weekday breakfasts to evening drinks happen

• A dining space that can shift easily from school projects to dinner parties

• A family living area that’s set up for playing, relaxing and hosting

• A snug or quiet lounge designed for switching off

• Oversized doors opening onto a garden that feels like part of the home, indoor-outdoor living

It’s less about being clever and more about being intentional by designing rooms that reflect how you actually live.

1. Plan your layout to support everyday life

Multifunctionality starts with flow. In an open-plan home, layout is what helps a space feel calm rather than chaotic.

A well-thought-out layout creates natural zones without blocking sightlines or adding clutter. It encourages movement while helping each part of the space feel grounded.

Things to think about:

• Use natural focal points (like a kitchen island, fireplace, or a garden view) to guide how the room is arranged

• Position seating thoughtfully, whether that’s around a TV, a coffee table, or a conversation area

• Leave space to move, especially when little ones, guests or pets are part of the mix

• Add built-in storage that blends into the design while keeping everyday clutter out of sight

A space with good flow doesn’t just look better. It feels better to be in.

2. Choose furniture that adapts with ease

The best furniture in a multifunctional space is the kind that fits your layout, supports your lifestyle and adds something visually to the room.

Look for:

• Large dining tables that can seat a crowd but don’t overwhelm the space

• Kitchen islands with built-in storage and seating, so they’re just as useful for weekday breakfasts as they are for entertaining

• Modular sofas that offer flexibility without feeling overly casual

• Smaller pieces like pouffes, sideboards or drinks trolleys that provide function without fuss

Nothing should feel purely decorative, but everything should feel considered.

3. Use materials that are both practical and refined

In spaces that see everyday use, it’s best to choose materials that can take the wear without losing their look.

That doesn’t mean compromising on design. It just means thinking a step ahead so that your home stays looking its best over time.

Consider:

• Stain-resistant fabrics in neutral tones or rich textures for a lived-in, yet polished feel

• Hardwearing flooring like engineered wood or luxury vinyl tiles for areas that see a lot of footfall

• Quartz or composite worktops that hold up well in busy kitchens

• Wipeable paints in matt finishes – especially on lower walls where fingerprints tend to appear

These kinds of choices help keep your home looking fresh, no matter what life throws at it.

4. Let lighting do the heavy lifting

Lighting makes a huge difference in how a space feels and how it works across different uses.

Rather than relying on one overhead light, aim for a mix of sources that you can adjust depending on the time of day or what’s happening in the room.

Think about:

• Brighter task lighting for food prep or work zones

• Soft ambient lighting for relaxed evenings

• Feature lighting over key areas like the dining table or island

• Accent lighting built into shelving or cabinetry for extra warmth and depth

The right lighting lets a space change mood without changing anything else.

5. Use texture and tone to define each area

In open-plan spaces, using colour and texture thoughtfully can help shape different areas without disrupting the overall look.

Try:

• A darker paint colour or wallpaper in a corner lounge to create a more intimate feel

• Natural wood tones to warm up cooler materials in a kitchen setting

• Layered textiles like cushions, rugs and throws to add softness and make a space feel more inviting

• Open shelving or wall panelling to add depth and a sense of structure

These layers help each zone feel distinct, but still part of the same space.

6. Don’t overlook the quiet spaces

When the main living area is designed to be open and multifunctional, it’s often the smaller rooms that bring balance.

A quiet sitting room, home office or reading nook gives you somewhere to step away – whether that’s to unwind, concentrate, or simply enjoy a moment of calm.

These spaces don’t need to be large or overly styled. They just need to feel welcoming and well-considered. A place where the pace slows, even if only for a short while.

7. Make the most of outdoor space

In many modern family homes, the garden isn’t a separate space – it’s part of how the home functions.

When the design flows from indoors to out, it opens up even more possibilities for how a space can be used.

Consider:

• Covered seating areas for year-round use

• Outdoor kitchens or built-in BBQs for entertaining

• Integrated lighting and zoning to carry the interior atmosphere outside

• Storage benches or planters that keep things tidy while still feeling stylish

These outdoor zones extend the home’s functionality and make the most of every square metre.

Design that keeps up with modern life

Multifunctional living doesn’t mean packing in as much as you can. It means designing spaces that feel good to be in, respond to real life, support daily routines, and look consistently considered, whatever they’re being used for.

Whether it’s a kitchen island the world revolves around, or a separate lounge that offers a quiet contrast, the aim is the same: to create a home that’s not just beautiful, but easy to live in.
