The project forms part of the second phase of the iconic Tobacco Warehouse redevelopment in Liverpool, where we were asked by Harcourt Developments to design a penthouse show apartment that would appeal to the premium residential market while still respecting the building’s industrial heritage.

Our work on the project included full interior design, bespoke joinery design, on-site project support working closely with contractors, and interior styling ahead of the professional photography used to market the apartment. 

The Tobacco Warehouse is one of Liverpool’s most recognisable historic buildings, and its character is a huge part of its appeal. However, because the penthouses sit on top of the original structure, they don’t naturally benefit from the exposed brickwork and architectural features that define many of the apartments below. 

This became an important consideration in our design approach.

One of the key priorities was finding a way to reconnect the penthouse to the story of the building. Brick slips were introduced to feature walls and structural pillars to echo the industrial character of the warehouse, while keeping the overall scheme refined and contemporary.

From there, the design focused on creating a warm, layered interior that feels comfortable and liveable. Rich textures, earthy tones and carefully considered lighting help soften the architectural lines, while bespoke joinery allowed us to maximise storage and functionality without compromising on aesthetics. The open-plan living and dining areas were carefully zoned to create a natural sense of flow throughout the space. 

The finished apartment balances modern penthouse living with subtle references to Liverpool’s industrial past – something that felt particularly important given the history of the building.

What’s your favourite interior design style?

I love period properties with eclectic interiors! I like the mix of styles & eras within a space as well as original features that add character. I also love an interior that has an atmosphere; I personally love dimly lit rooms and moody hues.

I feel an interior should reflect your own personality; I’d like to think that people feel that my own home reflects my identity.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find a lot of inspiration from fashion, a personal love of mine! I am constantly seeing trends featured in the fashion world follow through into the interiors industry; I like to find print & texture trends & unusual colour combinations this way.

I also love to travel & I usually come back home from a holiday or city break with a fresh inspiration & a new perspective on design & how to push the boundaries!

I do also love a good scroll through Instagram! I really admire the property of @beetrootandblack & I find fashion inspiration from @trinnywoodall. She embraces colour and explains the ins and outs to creating a perfect look in her ‘Closet Confessions’ vlogs.

Best place you’ve visited?

My favourite place to visit is Skiathos, a small island part of the Sporades Island group in Greece. It is known for its amazing beaches, natural ambiance, cosmopolitan aura and vivid nightlife, this idyllic island is my dream home!

For a more energetic trip I love Barcelona, I adore the culture, the abundance of historic architecture and overall lively yet laidback vibe! I actually got engaged here so it has a special place in my heart!

Favourite colour?

My favourite colour is actually magenta however I rarely wear it or use in my interior schemes but I am very drawn to the vibrant, richness of this hue. I tend to lean towards deep, saturated shades for my personal interiors such as forest green & petrol blue.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!

I have self-taught floristry skills and I find flowers and floral creation very calming & satisfying to see the end results of something you’ve personally created.

I have created various centre pieces, bouquets and florals for cakes for various occasions. My favourite thing to create however are Christmas wreaths; I think a wild, floral wreath with a plethora of flowers creates such an opulent look on your front door over the festive period!

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Northern Design Awards, which will take place at the Titanic Hotel, Stanley Dock, on Friday 18th November, judges have named the finalists, including several prominent Liverpool designers and architects.

Director of Events, Shelley Mears, said: “The feedback from the judging panel this year is that the standard of entries has been better than ever. We are so excited to view these projects on the night and, of course, to award our winners at what will be our 20th event, making it a very special occasion for all involved!”

Natalie Holden Interiors are delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist for our Heswall contemporary house renovation project in the category ‘Interior Design Project Under £250k’. We cannot wait to go back to Liverpool and celebrate, where the business first launched. We’re in good company amongst other Liverpool creatives, including illustrator, artist and designer, Rebecca Christian, who has been shortlisted in the Designer Maker category, the team at KKA Interiors (in the Hotel Interior Design Category) and Unit 3 Design Studio who have been shortlisted as Best Architectural Practice.

The judging panel is made up of some of the most respected names in design and architecture, including interior design expert and TV presenter George Bond and former BIID President, Susie Rumbold. In previous years, judges have included broadcaster Linda Barker, Red or Dead founder Wayne Hemingway and George Clarke of BBC’s ‘Restoration Man’ and ‘Amazing Spaces.’

The awards have been held at a number of striking venues, including the Devonshire Dome in Buxton, Manchester’s stunning Monastery, the Chester Grosvenor and, of course, Liverpool’s iconic Titanic Hotel.

Shelley Mears said: “We last held the awards in Liverpool in 2016 at this very venue. It’s such a commanding and impressive space with such history. Our guests were so wowed by it, that it seemed an easy choice when we made the decision to bring the awards back to Liverpool for 2022.”

On the night of the awards, former Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year contestant, Emma-Leone Palmer, who has been making waves with her latest collection celebrating female desire and sensuality, will be showcasing five pieces from her new series at the Titanic.

Emma’s work has previously been censored by Meta for showing uncovered nipples and the artist said: “It’s very forward thinking of Shelley, who I immediately recognised as a fellow firework, to bring this to the awards. It’s really important that people push things forward and address censorship of the female form.”

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (who has been involved with the Northern Design Awards in previous years) said that Emma: “has absolutely captured the now but done it with the flawless technique of a classicist.”

The Northern Design Awards were launched out of a sense of frustration at the lack of representation for designers in the north, and a London-centric awards calendar which meant that the majority of high-profile design events took place in the capital.

Shelley Bond said: “The Northern Design Awards started as a small event designed to prove that there was an appetite to celebrate the huge amount of design talent that we have in the North of England. Now, 20 years on, we’re enormously grateful to the judges, sponsors and nominees who not only showed that there was a demand for this kind of event, but also made it possible for the awards to grow and develop over the years. I’m counting down to raising a glass to thank everyone who’s supported the Northern Design Awards, and to celebrating the achievements of this year’s winners. It’s shaping up to be a very exciting night!”
