Albert Dock Warehouse Apartment

The Brief

A one bedroom apartment in The Colonnades, Albert Dock, was designed to reveal the covered up original brick arched ceilings, and complimented with contemporary organic forms and a monochrome palette for a young professionals' first home.

Our Albert Dock warehouse apartment project has been a labour of love bringing back some exciting features back into the space.

Our client got in touch with a very specific brief, wanting an apartment designed with a Kelly Hoppen style. We of course put our own spin on her style and colour scheme, and tailored our designs with contemporary bespoke furniture that was perfect for a young professional who worked from home.

When we got our hands on this project, the apartment had been recently purchased and the previous owner had zapped all of the life out of it by covering up the exposed brick ceiling with modern spotlights everywhere. Plus every surface was a different tone of grey; the walls, ceilings, door frames, kitchen, carpets, bathroom, and walls were ALL grey. Sacrilege! You can see the before photos over on our instagram story highlights. We made it our mission to bring some balance and depth into the colour scheme, make it feel brighter, and add a touch of warmth to compliment the dark grey existing kitchen and structural pillars (which we decided to retain as they were).

We decided to remove the dropped ceiling to reveal the famous original brick arches, typical within an Albert Dock warehouse apartment, which added so much character and drama back into the space. We upgraded the lighting with dimmable wall lights throughout, in a warmer colour temperature for a cosier vibe.

The apartment had very awkward shaped rooms and pillar positions, which we unfortunately had to work with. Our space planning was carefully considered to ensure the furniture complimented the architecture of the space, with contemporary organic and simple curved forms to mirror the shape of the ceiling.
