When our clients, a couple from Cheshire, approached us in 2022, they were preparing for a significant transition in their lives. Both of their adult children had recently left for university, and they were beginning to reshape their family home into a forever home.

They felt now was the time to invest in a considered interior design scheme that suited their new lifestyle as a couple.

Their aim was to create a space that felt cohesive, calm and functional, with a clearer layout and a more contemporary feel. It had been 15 years since their last renovation and the interiors no longer supported their day-to-day routines. Several rooms needed rethinking to better support this new phase of life.

Having worked with the family before, they returned to Natalie Holden Interiors to help reconfigure the property and bring fresh clarity to the flow, purpose and atmosphere of each space.

The transformation achieved throughout the home would not only resolve the challenges of the original layout, but it would also go on to win Private Residence: Interior Decoration FF&E over £250k at the Northern Design Awards 2025.

The Challenge

The existing layout no longer aligned with how the clients used their home. Circulation across both floors felt disjointed, several rooms were underperforming, and the interiors had lost the cohesion they were seeking.

Key areas needed to be rethought, including:

  • The kitchen, which needed to better support cooking, hosting and daily living.
  • The utility room, which was too small and inefficient for everyday tasks.
  • Bathrooms and en-suites, which required modern layouts and updated finishes.
  • The first floor, which needed clearer zoning to establish two separate master bedrooms with adjoining dressing area/clothes storage & main bathroom.
  • The children’s bedrooms, which needed discreet, integrated ensuite access & updating to have a more mature feel.
  • Lighting and electrical planning, which needed a full rework throughout to support a calmer, more adaptable atmosphere.
  • Pet-friendly considerations, which needed to be integrated without disrupting the aesthetic.

These challenges formed the foundation for a complete internal reconfiguration across both floors.

Luxury interior design of a cheshire property

The Design Approach

The design centred on creating a more intuitive layout and a calmer atmosphere throughout the home. A warm and neutral palette, tactile finishes and natural materials were used to introduce a grounded, contemporary feel.

The entire property was redesigned in detail from lighting and electrical layouts to bespoke joinery, furniture selection, flooring, bathrooms and pet-friendly features.

Every space was given a clearer purpose, and the overall flow of the home was re-established through thoughtful spatial planning.

As a result, this Cheshire interior design project now feels cohesive from room to room, both in how it looks and how it works day to day.

Ground Floor Transformation

A kitchen with space to cook and connect

The kitchen became a key focus of the redesign. A double island layout was introduced – one island supporting cooking and preparation, and the other acting as a space for hosting, gathering and informal work.

The design uses wooden cabinetry, marble-topped surfaces and soft upholstery, creating a warm, contemporary feel. Pendant lighting enhances the atmosphere, while the generous island layout improves functionality and flow.

The adjoining dining area is bathed in natural light, with woven textures and oversized lighting that help the space feel both intimate and open.

Living spaces that feel comfortable and cohesive

The living room and snug were designed as softer, more restful areas within the home. Layered textiles, plush seating and curated lighting bring comfort, helping these spaces serve as places to unwind.

A utility room redesigned around everyday life

The utility room underwent one of the most dramatic transformations. What began as a small and inefficient space was redesigned into a multifunctional utility hub with bespoke storage and a built-in dog wash station, making it far more practical for day-to-day life.

Improved circulation and clearer transitions

Glass doors, natural materials and a refined staircase design create calmer transitions between the ground floor spaces. These details help reinforce a more cohesive aesthetic throughout the home.

First Floor Transformation

A boutique-style master suite

The first floor was reconfigured to create a private master suite, designed to feel like a comfortable retreat for each of our clients. The layout includes:

  • • A walk-in dressing room
  • • Individual bedrooms for the couple
  • • A freestanding bath
  • • A double, statement vanity
  • •A supersized shower hidden behind a dividing wall

Together, these changes bring a boutique, hotel-like feel while still supporting everyday comfort.

Hidden en-suites for a clean, minimal finish

In the children’s bedrooms, the ensuite bathrooms were concealed behind built-in wardrobe doors, maintaining a simple, uncluttered look while offering full functionality.

Guest rooms with a consistent palette

Guest bedrooms and their en-suites were updated in line with the wider aesthetic of the home, using calm colours and warm materials to create a cohesive environment that would stand the test of time.

Materials and Lighting

A harmonious palette of soft neutrals, warm woods, stone finishes and tactile fabrics brings consistency across the property.

Lighting and electrical layouts were completely redesigned, with layered lighting and smart controls introduced to enhance adaptability, functionality and mood.

The Result

The clients’ feedback sits at the heart of this transformation:

“We had such a great experience working with Natalie and Leanne on our home renovation. From the start, they really listened to what we wanted and created a design scheme that we absolutely loved.

They were there for us every step of the way – helping with room layouts, choosing the right pieces, and sourcing furniture that suited both our style and budget. Their advice and support made the whole process so much easier, and we’re thrilled with the end result.

We’d definitely recommend Natalie Holden Interiors to anyone looking to refresh or transform their home!”

Their experience reflects what the redesign set out to achieve: a home that feels clearer in its layout, calmer in atmosphere and better suited to their lifestyle.

Spaces now flow naturally, each room has a defined purpose, and the overall scheme feels warm, contemporary and consistent throughout. The home supports hosting, quiet evenings, practical routines and future needs with ease.

The project went on to receive industry recognition, winning Private Residence: Interior Decoration FF&E over £250k at the Northern Design Awards 2025, reinforcing the quality of the interior design work throughout the home.
